“Cindy, what do you do in your free time?”

1 November, 2017

Cindy Wei

Throughout high school, I committed every moment to figure skating, whether it be daydreaming about ice dance tests or scrutinizing my favourite athletes. Starting university in a different province, and leaving my skates back home, undoubtedly left a hole in my heart. Alarms no longer woke me up at 6:00 AM, and I didn’t need to create skating lesson plans during class. At the same time, I missed the commitment, my coach, and the thrill of competition.

My first year of university consisted of sporadic dabbling in various activities: Zumba, Pilates, even ballet. I received a 200-hour Ashtanga yoga teacher training certification that year, and have since led gentle yoga at the retirement home and KidsAbility. Last May, I discovered Brass Butterflies – a new home where I cannot even begin to name the talented, creative, and encouraging people I’ve met.

Up until recently, you have to be born into a circus family, or attend professional circus school, to fly. Now, circus classes are popping up for adventurous workout seekers. For a year, I have been completely infatuated, experimenting with silks, hoop, corde lisse, even contortion. Understandably, starting aerials at eighteen means that my chances of performing professionally are next to zero. My goal, however, is to become a sports medicine physician for Cirque du Soleil, or perhaps Disney on Ice, another lifelong dream.

If you have any questions about skating, yoga, or aerials, shoot me a message. And, if you have any circus connections or sports medicine connections, well, you know what to do.
