With the first term of my second year…
With the first term of my second year well under way I find myself wondering. I speculate about the origins of night terrors or ponder the future of the earth as resources dwindle disproportionately with the ever-expanding requirements of humans. Sometimes overwhelming, and more often amusing, my curiosity about the things I learn in class can lead to great discussions, whether it be with peer or professor. Leonardo da Vinci said, “study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in.” His words resonate with me this term. I have found that my genuine interest in the sciences has really helped me to remain focused on my work. Whether in the chemistry lab, participating in psychology research, or learning about biodiversity in ecology, I am always expanding my knowledge and feel so fortunate to be a part of such a stimulating environment at the University of Victoria. Keeping up with the courses, some of which I share with my fellow Schulich Leader and friend, Aliya Khan, and remaining healthy and active by running and playing on a volleyball intramural team, I am not surprised by how quickly the last few months have gone by. I look forward to this winter break when I can ski, enjoy my family’s company, and continue my volunteer work at the North Okanagan Hospice Society, where they are short on volunteers at this time of year. With this chapter coming to an end, I cannot wait to see what term two has in store.
