U of T and SFU confirm their #2018SLSquad selections!

1 May, 2018

Six more Schulich Leaders join the mix. U of T and SFU make their selections, adding to an already impressive group!

U of T is once again amongst the top five universities with the most applicants, awarding a total of four scholarships this year. Sidrah Rana is the first of two science recipients. She hails from White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, ON. Emma Mogus previously won the SLS in 2016 from the same high school to attend McMaster. Possessing a strong passion for scientific research, Sidrah once did a research internship at one of UofT’s affiliated campus labs. Joining her is fellow science recipient, Daniel Hoogsteen from Nelson High School in Burlington, ON. He too is the second winner from his school – Nicole Pitre won in 2012 to attend UWaterloo. Daniel is a talented, dedicated and hard working musician. His specialty is the saxophone and he has performed in front of many live audiences.

The first of two engineering students at U of T is Eli Scott. Currently based in Renfrew, ON, the Renfrew Collegiate Institute grad has been involved with the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Environmental Project, which focuses on making change that benefits people, animals and the environment. The second engineering student is Markus Kunej from North Park Collegiate-Vocational School in Brantford, ON. Markus used technology and innovation to create the “Echo Belt”, a hands-free navigation device for the visually impaired.

SFU’s squad is also comprised of promising individuals. Pursuing biological sciences and physics is Antonia Kowalewski from two-time SLS winner Reynolds Secondary in Victoria, BC. Rebecca Hansen won there is 2016 and currently attends UVic. Alongside three others from her school, Antonia founded Global Café – a series of weekly ‘cafés’ where students are invited to explore food and music from a variety of cultures. This has helped mitigate feelings of exclusion felt by international students and has fostered friendships across the diverse student body at her school. Joining Antonia is engineering student Bradley Schellenberg from Seaquam Secondary School in Delta, BC. With his peers, Bradly competed in the 2016 VEX Robotics World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. After nearly one thousand working hours throughout the year, his team won the BC Provincial Championships and qualified for the World Championships. By the end of the tournament, his team had placed within the top ten for their division.

We look forward to welcoming this new group of outstanding students to the #2018SLSquad! The 2018 group is full of STEM stars and elite student leaders!
