Queen’s, Western and York have solidified their picks, completing the 2018 SLSquad!

Angela Choi from Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton, New Brunswick is the first of Queen’s science recipients. Angela has a strong passion for volunteering, having helped at a local nursing home, hospital, school clubs, STEM Expo events, Peer Tutoring program, various fundraising events, and as a pianist. She also enjoys acting as a leader within her school by organizing a variety of events. Joining Angela is fellow science student Sonal Gupta from Bayridge Secondary School in Kingston, Ontario. Also a leader within her school, Sonal has acted as a peer mentor and played for the Kingston Impact Basketball’s Junior Elite League of Ontario’s (JUEL) Preperatory team.

Queen’s engineering recipients are highly impressive. Bedford, Nova Scotia Charles P. Allen High School grad Sophia Ludovice plans to pursue chemical engineering. Sophia has received many amazing accolades throughout her school years, including being awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award by her school, which was presented by Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor. Peter Matthews from Lambton Central Collegiate Vocational Institute is also studying engineering at Queen’s. Peter has previously won the Chemical Institute in Canada Award for his project on the effect of various solvents on the rate of electrolysis.

Western adds two new Schulich Leaders to the mix. Ryan Harlen will be entering the Faculty of Science this Fall. The Stoney Creek, Ontario based Saltfleet District High School grad has earned various awards for recognition of his academic achievements, including the ‘school champion’ medal for the highest score at Saltfleet High School in each of the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat math competitions and various other subject awards. Tony Xu from Earl Haig Secondary in Toronto is studying engineering at Western. After winning the IBM award at Big Data Challenge 2016, his research paper analyzing 550,000 scientific papers to determine how researchers can increase the impact value of their research papers was published in the STEM Fellowship Journal. 

York also adds two new students to their Squad. Katrina Carver from Citadel High School in Halifax is pursuing science. Katrina was awarded the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal by her school community in 2017. As well, as a Model United Nations delegate, she developed confidence, learned to take risks, and exhibited personal growth, which also resulted in receiving numerous awards. Jack Wawrow from Holy Names Catholic High School in Windsor, ON joins Katrina as York’s engineering recipient. An honour roll student, Jack is a SHAD fellow, having won last year. While at SHAD he learned how to start a business as well as many other topics related to the STEM fields.

With this group of eight Leaders now here the 2018 class of Schulich Leaders is complete! We welcome you all and look forward to sharing many special experiences with you. Being a part of the SL Network is an amazing experience and we can’t wait to see how you flourish throughout your undergraduate studies.
