So the last time I wrote here…
So the last time I wrote here, it was nearing the end of the second semester of last year. At that point, I already knew that I would be coming back to Lister Residence as a second year volunteer (an “Orientation Captain” officially, or OC for short), and I explained how excited I was to get to spend another whole year in, what is, in my opinion, the best place on Earth. What I didn’t know, was this year in residence would turn out to be a million times better than the last.
As a second-year in residence, I receive a certain degree of respect automatically, which was definitely absent last year. This means that I have more friends than ever before, and coming from a rather lonely experience in high school, new friends are very welcome.
My new status has also allowed me to take on some new leadership roles as well. The first-years often seek my advice or help with homework, and I am able to contribute more meaningfully to floor projects and activities. I have also become involved in the peer-tutors program where I am able to help Lister Residents with their school work for free. In addition, I am a member of the Lister Hall Student’s Association’s Finance Committee, which handles the student group’s budget and other financial matters. All of these activities have given me great satisfaction over the past few months; I am happy to contribute to the Lister community.
My increased involvement has also prompted me to participate in the university’s Emerging Leader’s Program. Here, I have, and continue to learn a lot of new skills, and am becoming a better and better leader after every session. All this improvement and new involvement has already got my thinking about my options for next year. I think I would like to become even more involved and run for the position of Floor Coordinator, a paid position, and the first step to becoming an LHSA Executive.
However, all these aspirations will have to wait, because right now, the only thing on my mind is my five exams coming up in the next week!
