The #2019SLSquad continues to grow!

Queen’s university adds four new members to its Squad! They once again received two additional scholarships due to attracting a high number of scholarship applicants this year. Their first of two science recipients in Anthony Galassi. A graduate of Saint Paul Catholic High School in Niagara Falls, ON, he was a finalist in the Young Entrepreneurs: Make Your Pitch competition by the Ontario Centres of Excellence for the London Region. Isabeau Lewis is also pursuing science at Queen’s. Nominated by Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto, ON, she has been a coordinator for a local elementary’s social justice club for the past six years. As a role model for grade fives/sixes, she creates a positive environment and teaches students to combine school skills and activism to run humanitarian campaigns in their community. Andrea Stachow is one of two engineering recipients at Queen’s. The Ladysmith, BC based grad from Ladysmith Secondary School, received a first-place award for the title of Ladysmith’s Vice-Ambassador and Miss Congeniality in 2018-2019. George Trieu is also studying engineering at Queen’s. The Toronto, ON based R.H. King Academy grad participated in UofTHacksVI. His team placed 3rd from over 100 teams at one of Canada’s biggest hackathons for building a robot to detect potholes in the roads. Finding out that potholes in Toronto are a huge issue for residents inspired them to build this project.

McGill adds two new students to their Squad this year. Marin Schultz from School of Hope Home Education Program in Camrose, AB is studying science. Marin has a passion for scientific research to inspire the next generation and has spoken at science fairs, clubs, schools, festivals and youth forums both nationally and internationally. Most notable is his involvement with Festival Eureka! and Genius: 100 Visions of the Future which allowed him to share research with international scientists. Cyril Mani, a graduate of Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal, Quebec, is studying engineering at McGill. Cyril is the second winner from his school – Nicolas Fillion received the SLS in 2017 at Laval. Cyril also received the Scholarship of the Order of Engineers, which draws its value on the illustration of one’s passion for Science.

Western’s Squad also continues to grow. This year’s science recipient is Katie Brown from Heart Lake Secondary School in Brampton, ON. Katie was elected the leader of her team of eight for the month-long Shad Entrepreneurial Design Challenge. Joining her is engineering student Liam Israels from Medway High School in Arva, ON. Liam is the third winner from his high school. Ethan Rigby won in 2017 at UCalgary and Emelyn Kupinski won in 2018 at McMaster. Liam was selected as the first high school student in 13 years to participate in a co-op position at the NRC (National Research Council Canada) in London, where he worked alongside a team of engineers developing sensors and digital mapping systems for autonomous vehicles.
