My first semester at the University of New Brunswick has been absolutely wonderful
My first semester at the University of New Brunswick has been absolutely wonderful. It has been filled with new experiences, excitements and challenges, and I have loved every second.
I come from a small town in Newfoundland, so moving away from my comfort zone made me very nervous. However, living in residence was a great way to relieve my anxieties as I have met lots of new friends that make UNB feel like a second home.
In my first semester, I studied science. While I was fascinated in what I was learning, I am thinking about making the switch to the faculty of kinesiology next semester. I discovered my interest in this field by studying physiology and exercise metabolism in my biology class, which I found very intriguing. I feel that it is better suited for me, and taking the honours route will enable me to partake in a research project in the areas of human mechanics and health, which I am very passionate about. I found that the workload in university is a lot more intense than high school, but with the help of phenomenal profs here at UNB, I was able to stay on top of the work this semester and perform well in the new environment.
Aside from academics, I am having a great time getting involved on campus. Being heavily involved in the Relay for Life back home, I was eager to join the Steering Committee for the Relay for Life here at UNB. I am very excited to be serving as co-chair! Furthermore, I volunteer regularly with Let’s Talk Science, where I visit schools in Fredericton and lead groups of students through science experiments. I am also very fortunate to be a member of the varsity track and field team at UNB, where I am able to continue to compete in my favourite sport on a more competitive level. My coaches and team mates are awesome, and I love being a V-Red! I highly recommend getting involved on campus very early, as it makes the transition for high school to university easier!
My first semester of university greatly exceeded my expectations. The University of New Brunswick is an excellent place to learn and grow. While I am going to enjoy my Christmas break, I am eager to return to my second home for semester two!
