Canada's Treasure, Dr. Donna Strickland meets the Schulich Leaders

1 October, 2019

Schulich Leaders were priviliged to meet with Canada’s 2018 Nobel Laureate and third female Nobel recipient in Physics, Dr. Donna Strickland, last month. Awarded for her profound developments in chirped pulse amplification, this technology was developed in 1985 by Dr. Strickland and Gérard Mourou, proving integral to the advancement of laser technology used for commercial application in smart phone manufacturing and laser eye surgery.

Schulich Leaders had the exclusive opportunity to learn about Dr. Strickland’s career, along with a rivetting presentation of her laser research and life as a Nobel Laureate.

She opened the floor for Q&A to help Schulich Leaders learn about the possibilities to innovate within a university at the highest levels and how one can yield extraordinary discovery.

Dr. Strickland was kind to take photos with our group and connect personally with our scholars on campus this Fall.

Student enrichment events like these provide access and invaluable experiences while Schulich Leaders are on campus. University of Waterloo President, Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur, makes a point to meet with our Schulich leaders annually to provide career guidance and encouragement. He continues to set a new standard of what student enrichment can be and has been a terrific ambassador for the Schulich Leader Scholarships program.
