All too quickly, my first year of university draws to an end. This past year has been nothing short of an unique learning experience for me. I realized the amount of knowledge that I learned in high school is nothing when compared to the vast foundation of knowledge offered to me in university. The courses here could be difficult at times but they provided me with an interesting perspective on how engineers analyze the world. As part of the common year program this past semester, I took courses related to Electrical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering. This broadened my knowledge in different aspects of engineering. I also got into Mechanical Engineering as my first choice of faculty for next year. During this summer break, I have decided to take more courses to further my education and get a head start on second year.

Outside of school, I have had the opportunity to be involved with many club activities related to Engineers Without Borders’ FairTrade Team and Light up the World. Throughout the semester, our Fairtade team would setup information booths and create events around campus. This was our effort to promote FairTrade and to make University of Calgary a FairTrade Campus. Alongside the FairTrade team, I volunteered with hard working peers to inform the student body about Light up the World. At the end of the year, I was elected as the VP of events for the club.

Another activity I am involved in is Scholar’s Academy. Here, I have met more high achieving students. Together, we initiated a cohort project to further increase sustainability on campus. For this project, we worked with the sustainability office and asked the student body to voice their opinions on school sustainability. In this way, we are able to create a more sustainable campus in the future.

Looking back, this past year has been amazing for me and I look forward to the next one!
