A look back at SLXONTARIO & SLXBC: Connect & Inspire
SLXONTARIO (9/16/16)
In the second week of classes, 75+ Schulich Leaders from 7 universities across Ontario convened in downtown Toronto at MaRS Discovery District for our inaugural regional event: SLXONTARIO – Connect & Inspire. The event aimed to do just that, connect scholarship recipients with each other in the heart of Canada’s innovation hub to build inter-university connections, acquire career-building lessons and enjoy stimulating content from their Schulich Leader peers and industry leaders.
The event also made time for breakout session group discussions and general networking opportunities. We look forward to expanding this regional event model in 2017!
A highlight of SLXONTARIO was the Schulich Leader Talks – with a TEDx-style format that provided the opportunity to spotlight some of the incredible initiatives our Schulich Leaders are spearheading.

In addition to two captivating sessions of Leader Talks , SLXONTARIO presented candid sessions with leaders in Canada’s tech sector and innovation at the university level. Guest speakers included Jordan Banks, Managing Director of Facebook Canada, Dr. Cynthia Goh, Director of U of T’s Banting and Best Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and David Stein, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of Leaders Fund Inc. These presentations gave our Schulich Leaders the inside track towards making an impact in their formative years of undergraduate study and beginning a career path.
A special thanks goes to our committee of SL Squad Captains across Ontario, from North to South: Alana Sorgini & Adesewa Oloko (UOttawa), Sophia Miao & Jamie-Lee Freeston (Queen’s), Ben Shachar & Yaakov Green (YorkU), Joan Romero (U of T), Cindy Wei, Aaron Grenke & Lucas Palmer (UWaterloo), Flora Jung & Kyra Moura (WesternU) and Alex Dhaliwal & Jessica Loiseau (McMasterU).

SLXBC (9/23/16)
Across Canada on the west coast, Schulich Leaders of Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia convened at UBC’s The Nest Art Gallery to hold an intimate regional event: SLXBC.
Presentations from the Faculty of Engineering at UBC were given by Dr. Elizabeth Croft and Dr. Peter Ostafichuk; with Canadian Research Chair of Molecular Cardiac Physiology at Simon Fraser University, Dr. Glen Tibbits sharing his career path and impact in this medical field. Our very own 2012 Schulich Leader, Claire Preston of McMaster University, delivered a presentation on how to succeed during undergraduate years in addition to a synopsis of her research. Thank you Claire!
Schulich Leaders were also able to participate in breakout networking sessions and enjoyed some photo opps with the new swag in front of the media screen.
